What is it?
The French National Honor Society (La Société Honoraire de Français) at McKinleyville High School is part of a national organization whose intent is to recognize and honor high school students who have maintained excellent grades two or more years of French-language classes.
What are the requirements?
Members must be enrolled in French 3 or 4, with a 3.45 overall GPA. Additionally, an inductee must have an A in French class during the semester in which the student is selected to be inducted into the organization. Another requirement is completing service-learning hours. For the 2014-2015 school year, we are going to be working with 4-H Trail.
Why be a member?
Zachary Richard, French-language singer/songwriter, offers: "A language is not only a means of communication, but also a mark of identity. Your commitment to the French language is not simply an interest in French culture, but also proof of a spirit of tolerance and open-mindedness which are the greatest aspects of that culture."
In addition to the chapter providing a vehicle for focusing activities around French language and culture, there is the opportunity for students to experience leadership in serving as officers, directing the initiation ceremony, and leading other chapter events.
By being in this organization, members may earn travel and study scholarships, be eligible to participate in a creative writing contest, and qualify for other awards and grants. Graduating seniors can wear a blue, white, and red chord, place an official SHF seal on their diplomas, and will have earned the right to wear the official emblem or pin of the honor society.
But, best of all, SHF members actively participate in their schools, in their communities, and in the world.
What is Induction?
At induction, the S.H.F. history is usually read, culminating with the lighting of candles. Each student holds a candle, and the student next to him or her recites the motto, L'homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux. All the members are considered inducted when the last candle is lit.
